Nonama Cookies? Contest?

I need help from all of you, whoever can spare some of their time and creativity to help me name this cookies that I've created. I was so excited to edit the photo to show to a friend of mine when I realised that I have no name for it, yet. I know I have creative friends out there who can help me give it a name besides NONAMA COOKIES at the moment. If you wish to help, please fill in the form and who knows, if the name you've given is chosen, you might get to taste the cookies! Is this a contest mama....well..... lu pikirrr la sendiri.... hahahaha....

This naming game will be on for a week, till next Friday insyaAllah Due to overwhelming response from all of you, I shall shorten the period of the game until this Monday, 12 midnight Malaysian time, so that we can sort out the names and start with the poll... and at the same time, reducing the guilty feeling that I will be having for not being able to choose all the lovely names you' ve suggested. To be fair, that I am not being bias, I think, there'll be a poll for the best name, nominated by all of you my lovely visitors. But that depends on how many names I get. Biskut Dahlia

To sleep or not to sleep... ....normally that question only require very little and almost zero thinking and consideration from me. The answer will always be TO SLEEP. But out of the norm, yesterday, I had a hard time agreeing to myself with that TO SLEEP answer. Thanks to these two ladies, Mak Lang and Jid who managed to reverse the answer to NOT TO SLEEP! I thought of taking a short (boleh percaya ke short! Hehehe...paling short pun, 1 jam kot...hihihi) nap around 7 am. Syahmi was sleeping downstairs after sehri and the way he slept, made me really wanted to join him. Gosh, how I have to fight the feeling (wah...dah macam lagu ler plak bunyinya... can't fight the feeling.. hihihi)! Both these ladies kept chatting with me until it was just too late to take a nap! Thank you ladies...jasa-jasamu ku kenang! Hahaha....
But actually, I never regretted with that decision. I managed to finish the house chores in good time and even cooked for Iftaar, much much earlier than usual. Infact I managed to bake two cookies, one of which is my daring experiment! Will share the recipes with you guys soon, not to worry. And as a reward to my sacrifice, I got to go galavanting with dear hubby in the evening.... you know how much I love to go for a ride! Hahaha...macam budak kecik je....

As mentioned, one of the cookies that I've just tried yesterday came from the ever famous cyber chef Che Mat Gebu's Blog . According to Mat, this recipe was from Norazie RN Thank you so much to Norazie and Mat for sharing this lovely Biskut Dahlia recipe. Only thing, mine are not as lovely as yours. Note to Mat : You must have forgotten to paste the 'mandrem' you used when baking those lovely cookies of yours.... hahahaha..... Here's the recipe if anyone care to try it for this Eid.....

BISKUT DAHLIA

Ingredients :

300 g butter
140 g icing sugar
2 egg yolks
1 teaspoon rose essence
240 g flour*
100 g cornflour*
160 g custard flour* (*sift together)
Red cherries

Method :

1. Cream butter and icing sugar. Add in egg yolks and rose essence. Continue beating.
2. Add in sifted flour a little at a time until a soft dough is formed.
3. Place a bit of dough into the mould and press onto the baking tray, lined with greaseproof paper. Place a piece of cherry on top.
4. Bake in a preheated oven at 175 C for 15 to 20 minutes.
5. Leave to cool before removing from the tray. Keep in an airtight container.

English Bread

To cook or not to cook? That depends...
.... if I am in the mood, I'll prepare this and that, until hubby would ask, who's gonna eat all these?
.... But if I am not in the mood, I really had to squeeze this tiny brain of mine, to come out with the menu, which normally will end up with... let's eat out!

I would prefer if my family request their menu. It's much easier that way, saves me a lot of energy to think! Hihihi... The only thing I have to do then is just to look up for the recipe and prepare the dishes, which I don't really mind! It's always the thinking that makes me tired!

The first Ramadhan, we had our Iftar in Malacca, at my hubby's cousin's place.
Second Iftar at the restaurant infront of our house because we reached home from Malacca just on time for Iftar.
Third Iftar, kids had asked for their mom's 'tipu-tipu' sushi and for hubby, I prepared plain sambal, kobis masak lemak and fried chicken.
Fourth Iftar, kids wanted fried sausages, scrambled eggs, Hash brown and bread. But since my bread wasn't ready, so it wasn't served that day... For the parents, fried rice and mee basah... which were then joined in by the kids as well....
Fifth Iftar.....bought Mutton Briyani, Chicken Briyani, for hubby, me and Syahmi. Fatin wanted egg noodle soup...bought from PaRam (Pasar Ramadhan).
Sixth Iftar... we'll soon to find out.... hahaha....
No photos taken as mama is not in much mood to do so....



Recipe for this entry will be the bread that was supposed to be served during Fourth Iftar. I was bloghopping when I landed at Noreen's Blog . Can't help drooling over her lovely bread photos that I just have to pick at least one to try and decided on the English Bread, with a slight improvisation. I added colors to the dough. Thank you Noreen and Happy Home Baking for the recipe.

ENGLISH BREAD

Ingredients :

300g bread flour (I used multipurpose flour)
1 teaspoon instant dried yeast (I used mauripan)
1 tablespoon castor sugar
1 teaspoon salt
30 ml (2 tablespoons) fresh milk
180 ml lukewarm water
10g butter (I used margarine)

extra margarine for glazing

Method : (using a breadmaker)

1. Pour the water and fresh milk into the bread maker pan.
2. Add in flour and all the other ingredients except butter/margarine.
3. Press the setting to Basic Dough and let the Bread Maker does it's job. After 5 minutes, add in butter and let the Bread Maker continue processing for another approximately 1 1/2 hour.
4. Punch down the dough to let the air out.
5. Divide dough into three portions and add color to each portion.
6. Roll the dough into long shapes, then plait them together.
7. Place the plait into a loaf pan greased and floured. Let it rise double the size.
8. Bake till golden brown.
9. Once out of the oven, brush with a bit of butter to give it a shiny look.
10. When it's cool enough, slice and enjoy!

I thought of updating my blog earlier than this but we can only plan, ALLAH knows best. Hubby made an ad-hoc plan to go back to Malacca to break our fast with his family. We were in Malacca till Sunday evening.



Now let me write something about the poll that I recently put up on my blog. Thank you so much to those who took some of their precious time to cast a vote, all the 147 of you. Thank you so much. It meant something to us. Speaking of US, let me reveal, who is my 'opponent'. Tha dha.....she is Mak Lang Azie. We were chatting about recipes when this thingy about sugar came up. I had described the Giant's fine sugar packet as yellow and blue but she said it's yellow and green. Both of us were so stuck up (in our opinion) and refused to give in! Finally this poll idea came to mind and were agreed by Mak Lang. There is no consipracy or what not, about this poll. It's just mainly for our satisfaction actually. And this is the result until late Thursday evening.......For clearer result, please click here

Well actually, there is no right or wrong answer here. All of us have our opinion about almost everything. It's just how people see things...... I had described the fine sugar packet to be Yelllow and Blue, to differentiate the Giant's Coarse Sugar which is Yellow and Pink..... Or is there anyone who wants to argue about the packet for the coarse sugar? Hahaha.... When I asked those who answered Yellow and Green, mostly will describe the top part of the packet color which is obviously yellow, and the green part is for the writing. Well, actually that Yellow and Green is Giant's color. We are talking about the sugar packet and not Giant.... at least, that's how I see it and that's my arguement... I rest my case.....

Since I am just too lazy to type new recipes, I will just 'kidnap' this recipe from my my fotopages. Did this cookies for 2006's Eid in Malawi. The recipe came from a good friend of mine. Naseem. Thank you for sharing dear and really miss you guys so much. Take care.....

For the recipe....

CHOCOLATE CRESCENT

Ingredients :

250 g butter (I used margarine)
3/4 cup castor sugar
1 egg yolk
2 cups desiccated coconut
4 tablespoons cocoa powder ~ sifted
2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
Flour as needed
White cooking chocolate ~ decoration

Method :

1. Cream butter and sugar until light and creamy.
2. Add egg yolk and continue beating.
3. Add in desiccated coconut, cocoa powder, baking powder and mix.
4. Add flour as required to make soft dough.
5. Dust rolling board with a little flour and roll out dough to 6 mm thickness.
6. Cut using a crescent cutter.
7. Bake in a preheated oven at 160 C for 20 minutes.
8. Leave to cool and decorate as desired.

Being far away from home and listening your mother tounge's song being aired on a foreign channel, is just something to me!

Chocolate n Orange Marble Cake

I am sure all of you have heard this saying... WINNING IS NOT EVERYTHING.... To me, it means something... Winning gives me satisfaction....do I sound so selfish? Well, that's the truth. But if I were to win, I want to win it fair and square. No cheatings...boleh percaya ke? Hihihi...

Argued with a good friend of mine about the color of this fine granulated sugar from Giant...haha ...mama dengan kawan dia dah tak de kerja lainlah tu... pasal peket gula pun nak bertekak! Muahaha... tak de la, saja mengisi masa lapang....tak gitu, my fren?..... Both of us just can't agree with the colors. I had my own explanation and she had hers. To end this 'arguement'. I've created a poll on the right top corner of this blog. So to all, if it's not that much to ask, I hope you'll take a few seconds of your precious time to cast a vote. Not that there'll be a winner or what, just plain satisfaction to both of us. The poll will be up till this Thursday, approximately a week.

Came across this cake when I accidently landed in this lovely blog called goodtoknow . Fell in love with the look of their Chocolate and Orange Marble Cake and decided to give it a try except, I didn't do the icing which makes my cake looks less scrumptious. But all the same, it's nice.... My thanks to GoodToKnow for sharing this recipe with us.... Allow me to copy and paste the recipe here so that many others can give it a try... thanks...

For the recipe......


CHOCOLATE n ORANGE MARBLE CAKE
Serves: 8
Prep and cooking time: 1 hour 20 mins

175g (6oz) caster sugar
175g (6oz) unsalted butter, softened
175g (6oz) self-raising flour
1tsp baking powder
3 large eggs, beaten
1tbsp fresh orange juice
2tsp finely grated orange rind
1tbsp cocoa powder blended with 2tbsp hot water

For the icing :
100g (4oz) plain chocolate
15g (½ oz) butter
1tbsp golden syrup
Strips of orange rind, for decoration

1. Put the sugar, butter, flour, baking powder and eggs in a bowl. Beat with an electric whisk for 3 to 4 mins until pale and creamy.
2. Transfer half the mixture into a second bowl. Into this mixture, fold the orange juice and rind. Fold the cocoa into the first bowl.
3. Spoon the two mixtures randomly into a greased, lined 18 x 25cm (7 x 10in) cake tin. Draw a knife through the mixture to create the marble effect.
4. Bake at 180°C (350°F, gas mark 4) for 35 to 40 mins until firm. Remove from the oven and leave to cool in the tin for 5 mins, then turn out and cool completely on a wire rack.
5. For the icing, place the chocolate, butter and syrup in a bowl over a pan of simmering water and leave until melted. Remove from the heat, stir until smooth and leave to thicken.
6. Spread over the cake. Cut into 8 slices and decorate with orange rind.

Actually I wanted to write something this morning, but got carried away with something else. And since I am running out of time, I'll just paste a recipe that I've tried in my kitchen quite sometime back. Thanks to MamaZieza for sharing this cake recipe with us. For your information, MamaZieza is taking orders for her famous Chocolate Treasure. Anyone interested, you can start placing orders now!

ORANGE BUTTER CAKE

Ingredients :

300 g butter
300 g sugar
5 eggs (use 5 yolks and 4 eggwhites only)
320 g flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
2 tablespoons fresh orange juice
2 tablespoons sunquick (optional)
1 teaspoon orange paste
a drop of lemon yellow colloring


Method :

1. Sift flour and baking powder. Set aside.
2. Beat butter and sugar till light and fluffy.
3. Add in eggs, one at a time. Add coloring. Continue beating.
4. Fold in sifted flour and lastly the fresh orange juice, sunquick and orange paste.
5. Pour into the prepared baking tin, lined with greaseproof paper.
6. Bake in a preheated oven at 180 C for 40 - 45 minutes.

Pau Kacang Merah (Zanaz)

Yesterday, when I was blog hopping (not like a kangaroo though...hahaha), I came to Zanaz's blog and fell in love with her Pau photo. Looked for the recipe in her blog but can't find it. Just then, I guess luck is on my side, she came online. I didn't let the luck just went by like that. I buzzed her and asked her if the Pau recipe is classified or share-able (does this word really exist? Oh me oh my, I just hope my English teachers do not read my blog! Muahahahaha!)?

Her answer was,"Jap nak pi amik kitab kat bawah yek' Translation : Hold on. Let me go downstairs and take my book.

She went off for quite a while and then her name was signed off at Yahoo Messenger. Hmm I thought she's not giving it to me that time as she might be busy with her chores. Then my instinct says, just re-visit her blog once again, and yes, my instinct was right. She had already pasted the recipe there. Copied it and straight to the kitchen to try it out. It wasn't disappointing at all. My pau turned out to be so soft and yummy. Out of one recipe, I managed to get about 17 pieces. Gave to Kak Ana, 2 pieces, 7 pieces for my brother and the rest, for us. Since I can't taste it right away, I served to hubby when he came back from work and he finished two at one go, which I assumed, it must be good. And true enough, it was good! So thank you Zanaz for sharing this recipe with us.....

PAU KACANG MERAH

Ingredients :

300g pau flour
3 g instant dried yeast
50 g sugar
1 teaspoon ovalette
1/2 teaspoon bread softener
30 g corn oil
+- 160 ml water

Filling : Red bean paste

Method (bread maker) :

1. In the bread maker pan, add water.
2. Top with sifted pau flour, yeast, sugar, ovallette, bread softener and corn oil.
3. Set to Basic Dough setting and let the Bread Maker does it's job.
4. When the dough is double the size, remove from the BM.
5. Punch to let the air out. Divide dough into 30g each. Round it and leave to rest for 10 minutes.
6. Flatten the balls and place the filling. Cover it and arrange in the steamer.
7. Leave to prove double the size.
8. Steam for 10 minutes on high heat.

Note : To avoid water from dripping onto the pau, wrap the steamer lid with clean towel.

Jumaah mubarak...

Denmark Cookies

What I did today.....at least till 4.30pm...

1. InsyaAllah, fasting
2. Washed the car...thanks for the color, even a splash of dirt can be seen CLEARLY! Huhuhu...
3. Did a bit of gardening.... about time! The garden, if I may call it that way, is such a sore eyes! Pulled out the dried plants (the plants must be very thankful to me for ending their misery! Hahaha....)
4. Cooked lunch for Syahmi.
5. Tried two new recipes...won't be posting it today though....

Recipe to share is something that was passed to me by Mak Lang via email. I gave it a go and it was the right decision. The cookies turned out lovely even without the coating. And being MamaFaMi who is sometimes lazy but other times the opposite, I made this cookies into 3 different versions :
~ The first version is the original version required by the recipe i.e coat the cookies with melted chocolate and sprinkle with crushed ground nuts
~ Second version, the lazier style, just drizzle the cookies with melted chocolate and sprinkle with crushed ground nuts
~ Third version, the laziest among all, just leave the cookies naked uncoated and unsprinkled (is there such word! Hahaha)!

DENMARK COOKIES

Ingredients :

For the cookie :

2 cups sugar
1½ cups margarine
Vanilla essence
2 egg yolks
3 cups Maziena/corn flour ~ sifted
2½ cups flour ~ sifted

Method :

1. Cream margarine and sugar.
2. Add in egg yolks and continue beating.
3. Add in vanilla essence.
4. Add in the sifted flours, little at a time till a soft dough is formed.
5. Take a bit of dough and make into a marble size. Arrange on the prepared baking tray.
6. Bake till golden brown.
7. Leave to cool completely before coating.
Note : The cookies will expand when baked.

Coating : (I didn't do this. Instead, I just melt the cooking chocolate and dip the cookies in then sprinkle with some crushed ground nuts)
2 packets icing sugar
4 tablespoons cocoa powder
Enough hot water

1.5kg ground nuts (to be fried without oil then crushed)

What I did the past few days.....

Friday : Went dating with my little handsome boyfriend named Syahmi. We watched Harry Potter.
Saturday : Went back to Malacca for a day trip, just to visit hubby's cousin who just had an operation. On the way to Malacca, Syahmi fell ill. Took him to the family doctor and was diagnosed with virus infection.
Sunday : Went to hubby's relative's daughter's wedding at Denai Alam. Went to visit my princess at her hostel.
Monday :....about to find out.... hahaha.....

Recipe to share will be this Cake Layer Danish which happens to be my mother's favourite. Unfortunately, when I tried out this recipe, she was not around. She went back to Malacca with Mak Chu and Pak Chu. No worries mom, will bake this again when you're around.

CAKE LAYER DANISH
Source : DIY Home Bread by Chef Khoo See Yew

Ingredients for CAKE :

(A)
2 nos eggs
50g castor sugar
5g ovallette

(B)
55g multi purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder

(C)
20g water
1/4 teaspoon pandan essence
30g melted butter

Method :

1. Whisk A till fluffy. Add in B. Continue whisking till light and fluffy.
2. Add in water and melted butter.
3. Pour onto (11" x 11") greased baking tray (or lined with greaseproof paper).
4. Bake in a preheated oven at 180 for 15 minutes.


Ingredients for PASTRY

*175g high protein flour
*75g medium protein flour
7.5g milk powder
1/4 teaspoon bread improver
30g sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
25g egg
100g cold water
7.5g instant yeast
25g butter
125g pastry margarine/croissant butter (divide into 3 portions)
(* Note : I just used multi purpose flour)

Method (using bread maker):

1. Pour the cold water into the Bread Maker pan.
2. Add the flour, milk powder, bread improver, sugar, salt, egg and instant yeast.
3. Set the setting to BASIC DOUGH and let the BM does it's job. After 5 minutes or after the ingredients are well incorporated, add in butter and continue kneading until a soft and smooth dough is formed. Leave for at least 30 minutes.
4. Roll the dough flat, about 1 cm into rectangle shape. Spread 1 portion of pastry margarine onto 2/3 of the pastry, leaving a border.
5. Fold the bottom third of the pastry over the middle third and the top third over that.
6. Chill the pastry for 30 minutes and repeat steps 4 and 5 twice.

Red bean paste

Method : CAKE BREAD

1. Cut cake into 4 pieces. Each (5"x5"). Spread a layer of red bean paste on top. Arrange alternately.
2. Roll the dough into (35 x 20)cm, brush with butter, wrap in cake layers. Slash pattern.
3. Leave to prove double in size. Brush egg wash. Sprinkle almond nibes.
4. Bake in a preheated oven at 180 C for 25 to 30 minutes or till golden brown.
